INFOGRAPHIC POSTER
Marine Plastic Contamination – An Infographic Awareness Project
As a multimedia designer passionate about environmental storytelling, I created this infographic titled “Marine Plastic Contamination” to highlight the alarming levels of plastic pollution in our oceans. The goal was to design an impactful, data-driven visual that educates, raises awareness, and sparks change.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. I was inspired by disturbing facts such as:
1 in 3 fish we eat contains plastic
100% of marine turtles are affected by plastic waste
These insights motivated me to visualize the issue in a bold and gritty style that resonates with urgency.
CONCEPT & INSPIRATION
I structured the infographic to walk the viewer through key data and solutions:
Headline: Bold and distressed typography reflects environmental degradation.
Fishbone icon: Symbolizes the contamination in marine food chains.
Infographic Sections:
Plastic in Fish: 1/3 of consumed fish contain plastic.
Sources of Pollution: 80% from land, 20% from oceans.
Marine Impact:
100% of turtles, 59% of whales/seabirds affected.
36% of seals and 40% of seabirds ingest or are entangled in plastic.
Future Projections: From 5,000 million metric tons in 1950 to 25,000 by 2050.
Solutions Panel: Actionable steps including recycling, banning single-use plastics, and supporting cleanup campaigns.
DESIGN DECISIONS & DATA HIGHLIGHTS
Color Scheme: Deep ocean blue background with distressed earthy tones for contrast.
VISUAL STYLE & TOOLS
Iconography: Minimalist marine animals, plastic bottles, and gear icons.
Typography: Grunge display font for the title to evoke seriousness, supported by clean sans-serif for body content.
HEADING FONT: DESTROY
CONTENT FONT: INTER
Software Used: Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for layout and illustration.
This project served not just as a design challenge but as a platform to:
Raise awareness on a critical environmental issue.
Practice infographics as a visual storytelling medium.
Experiment with grunge-styled environmental aesthetics.
It reminded me that design is not just art—it’s advocacy.
